About the Artist

Born and raised in Perth, Western Australia, Jade Macri is a bold young visual artist whose practice fuses traditional tattooing with contemporary painting media. She began formal art studies at Curtin University in 2019, immersing herself in drawing and design before stepping away in 2022 to pursue a full-time apprenticeship in tattooing and embrace the underground artform. Completing her apprenticeship in 2023, Jade quickly established a distinct voice rooted in classic tattoo aesthetics—Bold linework, timeless motifs and dark gothic fantasy and 1980s Australiana traditional inspiration —while pushing those conventions into new territory through mixed-media painting and experimental surface treatments.

Her work explores the tension between permanence and change: the skin as a canvas, paint as gesture, and memory as mark. Across tattoos and gallery pieces she interrogates tradition with a fresh, contemporary sensibility—layering colour, texture and unconventional media to expand what traditional tattooing can look and feel like. Jade presented her first solo exhibition in 2025, a confident debut that showcased both intimate flash-style pieces and large-scale works that translate tattoo language into painterly form.

“When it comes to making art, there really are no rules. There used to be rules in tattooing, and then it became about creating something new and exciting on your canvas/client. I think the same goes for painting.”

Direct, uncompromising and technically assured, Jade Macri’s practice celebrates heritage while insisting on evolution—bringing tattoo culture into the gallery and painting into the tattoo studio, inviting new audiences one deliberate stroke at a time.
